Snippets of a Century:
Snippets of a Century was created by three generations of women in a family--Julia Press, her mother Naomi Press, and her grandmother Hilde Goodman (whose interviews you can access under the "People" page).
Julia, at the time a high school junior, decided to start this oral and visual history project after Hilde moved from California to New York 2 years prior. With some experience in filmmaking and editing, Julia decided to interview her grandmother and her new friends about their earlier lives, as a way for them to learn more about each other and relate on a deeper level. Julia led the project by doing the filming, editing, and some interviewing.
Naomi initially entered the project by providing Julia's transportation (as Julia does not yet have a driver's license). However, after sitting in on an interview, Naomi immediately became engrossed in the project and decided to help ask questions.
Hilde served as a liaison, spreading word about the project and finding willing participants. She also asked questions during the interviews and found it to be a great way to get to know new people.
If you hear voices of interviewers during any of these videos, they are the voices of the three of us--we sometimes couldn't help reacting to the captivating stories we were hearing.
We hope you enjoy navigating this website--the "People" page allows you to select one person at a time whose stories to explore, and the "All" page contains everyone's videos, so you can see the great variety of lives documented here.
